NetCousins' idea, "Star Students of Yesterday Creating Star Students of Tomorrow", was founded by a group of young Malaysians who wanted to use the Internet as a medium to share their secrets of being 'Star Students' - straight A scorers, active leaders and sports players all-in-one.
The home-based project was started in 2000 at an apartment unit in USJ Subang Jaya. The project team worked at odd hours, sat on the floor, shared computers, and used dial-up line for Internet. Many of the team members brought this working culture with them when they entered University Malaya. Many talented UM students joined the project.
Very soon the highly potential project received funding from a local incubator. The amateur team turned into a part and full-time employee team, led by project director NetCousin Foo Loke Min, a Royal Education Award scholar. Their first product, http://www.netcousins.com/, was launched in Sep 2000 by Prof Tan Sri Dr Rashdan Baba.
After launching the website, NetCousins conducted a serial of nationwide seminars on exam, study and Internet. Students and parents participated actively in 'creative, light & easy' talks on serious subjects.
NetCousins were invited to give exam advices and interviews on TV and radio. Registered members of the website recorded 5000 within just half a year!
